Character's Talk to Lauren Smith, Author of WICKED RIVALS #GuestPost #HotHistoricalRomance #Giveaway #LeagueOfRogues #Series

A cunning Scottish lady bests an English baron of legendary control in a game of business and seduction…

Yes that is what our special guest today writes, her most recent being Wicked Rivals that was released October 17th, 2016.  Today she's here telling us about how she listens to the voices in her head.

Whenever I’m a reader event one of the most common questions I get asked is “How do you get your ideas?” I think that’s one of the toughest questions to answer. But truthfully it’s not so much where ideas come from but where characters come from that matters when I start writing a book.
I almost always see a character in my head, forming so strongly that I can’t get them out. And I see that character in a scene acting a certain way and it just grows from there and the plot sorts it’s self out as the character begin to talk to me. So how does this work exactly when it comes to characters in a real book?
Well let’s see, when I first wrote Wicked Designs, the first book in the League of Rogues series, all of the six hunky gorgeous and totally bad boy English lords came to me fully developed. Ashton, the hero of Wicked Rivals, the fourth book, emerged as this tall, blond-haired man with refined tastes and in total control of himself. I knew immediately that this man had a unique story to tell. His desires, his lusts, his primal urges, especially in the bedroom had been carefully controlled and buried. I knew then that it was going to take one heck of a woman to make him lose that control.
Rosalind, the heroine of Wicked Rivals showed up most unexpectedly in the second book in the series called His Wicked Seduction. I had started to write a side scene where Ashton, having just been shot in the arm a week before, is sitting at his study, hating that he can’t accomplish any work without some degree of pain from his wound. This was one of those times where I really let the characters spin their story and let me glimpse their world. One minute Ashton is at his desk, and the next his butler is informing him that he has a visitor, an owner from a rival shipping company that he has been competing with in business. His intent is to buy the man from this other company out and remove the competition. What he doesn’t expect is to come face to face with a dark-haired Scottish beauty with a fiery temper. As it turns out, Rosalind shocked both Ashton and me when she let us know she was a widow of the man who owed the company Ashton wants to stop competing with. In other words, this is what it means when characters talk, and the way I listen back is to let them tell me their stories.
Wicked Rivals was truly a story driven by characters who wanted to tell me and the readers about their lives. Between the fiery Rosalind with her guarded heart and the cool, collected, masterful Ashton there was a love story full of sparks, desire and untamable passions, but also of true, fragile trust and intimacy that was built with long nights of Ashton and Rosalind holding each other and whispering of their dreams and secret longings. It’s a story of redemption and love that outlasts time and I’m so grateful to be an author whose characters love to talk to me.

Lauren Smith is back with the latest in her sexy #historicalromance series, League of Rogues, with WICKED RIVALS!

Length:  369 pages
Genre:  Historical Romance

Merciless and powerful, Ashton Lennox is a wealthy man because he puts business before everything else, especially love. As a member of the infamous League of Rogues, he’s no stranger to scandal. His bedroom conquests are as legendary as his fortune. As he searches for a way to bring down an old enemy bent on destroying the lives of his friends, the last thing he needs is a Scottish widow getting in his way.

The daughter of a Scottish lord with a dark and treacherous past, Rosalind Melbourne has spent years distancing from her past. After escaping her tyrannical father and marrying an aging English lord, she has become a powerful widow with a business empire at her command. Her business dealings are everything to her, leaving her no time for love. Especially not with her business rival Ashton, a man with a scandalous reputation as striking as his blue eyes.

Ashton is fascinated by the strong-willed, intelligent and sensual lady who, up until now, had outsmarted him at every turn. Rosalind wishes she could deny she is falling for the brooding, handsome baron. How can she possibly trust him when doing so could cost her what she values most—her freedom? When Ashton discovers Rosalind might hold the key to saving the League of Rogues, he knows he will do anything to woo his wicked lass. As their pasts return to haunt them and dark forces rise to keep them from exposing a deadly spymaster, their game of love turns to a game of survival…

Warning: This book includes a brooding baron who’s wild in bed, a crafty Scottish lass who never knows when to quit, a wicked game of strip chess, and a merry band of rogues whose first instinct is to run they hear wedding bells ring.

Read an Excerpt:

James stared at Eloise, brave, proud, innocent Eloise. He could relate to the passion in her plea. He had a sudden desire to be released from a betrothal himself. He fiddled with the corner of his napkin. “There is always the chance your betrothed won’t care if you’re ruined.” Some men did not. Her lashes fluttered. When they rose again, there was a look in her eye that sent lust coursing down his spine. It settled in his cock.
“If I’m to be married to a bilious flounder of a man for the rest of my life, I should like to know passion just once. Just once, James.”
“J-just once?” His voice cracked. Her smile blossomed.
“Perhaps more than once.” He had to laugh, although this was clearly no laughing matter.
“My dear. I would be happy to oblige.”
“Excellent!” She clapped her hands with glee. Unfortunate, that, because it made her look, once again, like a little girl. But then she picked up her cup and ran her pink tongue around the rim, lapping at the wayward drops. He reached for the second bottle. She held out her cup for a refill. “You will need to show me what to do.” He almost forgot to stop pouring. Hell yes. He’d love to show her what to do. He’d love to instruct her—in elaborate detail—what, precisely, to do. Something snarled in his belly. His palm itched. He forced down that decadent desire. Chained the beast. For God’s sake. She was an innocent, a virgin. If he opened with that card, not only would she truly be ruined, she would probably hie off to the nearest nunnery and spend the remainder of her life in seclusion. Oh, he would bed her. He would despoil and beguile her, but only in the very gentlest of fashions. But his fantasies, the darkling imagery of what he would truly like to do, simmered.
“Are you…” He cleared his throat. “Are you ready for your bath?”
“Heavens, yes.” Once again, she clapped her hands. The childlike gesture was off-putting since, at the moment, he was thinking of sinking his cock into her body and swallowing her moans with his mouth. But he liked her enthusiasm. It also made him desire—very deeply—to tie those hands to the bedposts. So she couldn’t clap them. Why that thought made him salivate, he didn’t know. Ah hell. Of course he knew. Despite the lust snarling through him, he managed a modicum of chivalry, although it was perfunctory at best.
“I’ll fashion a curtain.” Her next words nearly unmanned him.
“You don’t need to.”
“I b-beg your pardon?”
“You don’t need to bother with a curtain.” For a shy and demure innocent, she had something of a brazen streak. “I mean, if we’re going to…you know…”
“Make love?”
“Yes. If we’re going to make love, you will see me naked anyway.” A frown crossed her brow. “Won’t you?” He chuckled.
“Most certainly.”

Cecy Robson

Taran Wird holds the unique ability to conjure fire and lightning. She is mated to Gemini, Second in Command to the Squaw Valley Pack of the Lake Tahoe Region, and the sole werewolf to possess the ability to split into two wolves. And although they are mates, Taran's insecurities have driven them apart.

Devastated by an injury that left her with a zombie-like limb, Taran struggles to regain command over her magic. But when her arm and her power turn against her, lashing out on those she most loves, she knows she can no longer carry this burden alone. Not that she likes the alternative.

The only way to regain control of her magic is to align and learn from the local coven of witches―the very ones who sought to banish her when she and her three unique sisters first moved to the mystical region. But although Taran is trying, the teachings don't come easy, and the tasks leave her weak and emotionally shattered.

Yet Taran must learn and learn fast. Time is running out. The fire she once mastered so easily has become her greatest adversary and is now slowly burning her alive . . .

My focus drifts to my sisters. “Do what you have to and stay safe. Don’t worry about me.”
It’s a stupid thing to say. Of course they’ll worry. For once in our lives I’m the one who needs coddling. Not that I don’t absolutely hate it.
My hiking boots press into the ground as we move away from the road. They’re not what I count as cute shoes. But since my cute clothes tend to end up covered with blood and smelly supernatural fluids, here I am in jeans, a long-sleeved shirt and vest, and yeah, the hiking boots.
Bren leaps over a thick section of brush, landing smoothly as I try to figure out the closest way in. “It’s clear,” he says. “Come on.”
He means the first few feet are clear. I can’t see jack over these thick brambles. I look hopelessly to Emme, wishing I didn’t have to. She regards me almost apologetically, realizing what I’m asking her to do.
Emme is good at a lot of things: baking, scrapbooking, and keeping up on all our collective bills. But her aim sucks. So when she throws me over the brush with her force, it takes all I have not to scream. Thankfully Bren is good at catching, no matter how bad the throw.
“Christ,” I mutter as he eases me down.
Shayna inherited a bit of were from Koda’s essence. And while she’ll never heal or run as fast as a were, he gave her enough agility to clear the thick brambles without Emme’s help.
Poor Emme. Her aim isn’t any better on herself. Bren has to “go long” to keep her from slamming into a tree when she launches herself forward.
Shayna and I jog ahead to where Bren is lowering Emme to the ground. He kisses her cheek, a show of affection he often demonstrates to us, but this time she doesn’t welcome it like she once did. She meets his eyes, backing away slowly, as if she’s afraid to step too close. Bren frowns, speaking low. Emme answers with a nod, but again steps further away from him.
Shayna doesn’t seem to notice, skipping across the rugged terrain as if we’re out for a stroll and not walking into some evil crap we may have to kill before it rips us apart. But I notice. Something is definitely up with Emme. I stiffen when he strokes her cheek. And son of a bitch, it may have to do with Bren!

Where have I been??? As a HUGE fan of such Paranormal beasties as Vamps and Were’s, I cannot believe that Cecy Robson has been writing about the Weird girls for SIX BOOKS and I’m just now finding out about them.  Thank heavens she is releasing OF FLAME AND LIGHT (Weird Girls Book #7) now with such a gorgeous cover that completely caught my eye!

Getting to know Taran and her situation was easy as she drove the story and it had me engrossed in no time.  I had to know how she was going to ‘fix it’ for her limb, her relationship with Gemini, her self-esteem – everything. And I’ll tell you right now, what she goes through is sooo not for wimps. That girl is right up my alley though.  I loved her smart mouth and her uncanny ability to be appropriately inappropriate.  Best of all though, no matter how hard it got, Taran would not give up.  We could use some more of that IRL.

As much as I loved the book, I felt like it had a bit of a Star Trek ending and after all Taran went through, it wrapped up just a little too quickly.  I also really had a lump in my throat for large portions of the story, especially where Taran and Gemini were concerned and it seemed like that was kind of a little too long.  All in all, the book was so well written and I am sure that it would make fans of the series as well as newbies like me happy.  And I’m just so grateful to have seen this gorgeous cover and had the opportunity to read and review OF FLAME AND LIGHT so I could add a fantastic series to my group of beloved Paranormals.  If you have yet to read it, you are in for a treat!

****4 Stars****

I received a copy of this book from a tour promoter in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for this review.

I thought I put my past behind me.

I lost everything when I testified against my fiancé for the murders of five women. After the jury delivered a life sentence, I ran. I hoped if I could disappear, maybe the horror he caused would, too.
When I return to Florida for the first time after his conviction, I’m determined to face my fears and get my life back. Then, a woman is murdered and I’m the only one who believes her death features the same signature as those I’m trying so hard to forget.
Instinct tells me to run again, but local cop Logan Blackwell has never let a suspect–or a woman–get away. He’s made it his own personal mission to solve the case and he needs my help to do it.
I have no choice once we learn I’m the next target, but I’m not interested in getting close to another man, especially not a sexy former Marine who has secrets of his own.
